The shillelagh, the Irish stick with a fist-sized ball on the top, is named for the Shillelagh oak woods in Wicklow County, Ireland, where oak clubs were believed to come from.
As a small child, I lived in Ireland for eight months, first in Dunleary and then in Greystones, County Wicklow. During our time there, we travelled in the Dingle Peninsula, tasting unpasteurized milk and bathing in collected rainwater. We sailed the Canard Line out of Boston on 1 October 1966, taking six days to reach Cobh, County Cork, Ireland. We returned from South Hanmpton, England on 30 May 1967, sailing into New York, New York, five days later, past the Statue of Liberty.
Sailing in the Caribbean was one of my favorite vacations. I spent 9 days on a 50' ketch, sailing among the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. And got my Bareboat captain's certificate for it as well. Simply magical down there.
